Royal Troon Golf Club

Ayrshire, Scotland

Royal Troon Golf Club overview

Royal Troon Golf Club has hosted The Open nine times, most recently in 2016. This turned out to be one of the most exciting majors in recent history. Henrik Stenson came out on top over Phil Mickleson in an epic final round, named ‘Duel in the Sun II’. Royal Troon was founded in 1878 and has since been regarded as one of the best clubs in the UK. The club is home to two excellent courses, the Old Course and Portland Course, both offering a great challenge.

The Old Course is the more famous of the two and is ranked among the top golf courses in Scotland. The famous postage stamp 8th hole at Troon provides a stern test despite measuring little over 100 yards. The beautiful land in which Royal Troon is set provides beautiful rolling fairways that are interspersed with gorse and broom on many holes, creating a tough but enjoyable test of golf on both courses.

Old Course

Style: Coastal Links

The Old Course at Royal Troon Golf Club was founded in 1978 and has a very rich history. Host to The Open on seven sperate occasions, it is one of the most popular golf courses in the world. With deep rough, gorse and ever undulating fairways and greens, the Old Course provides a stern test of golf. The famous postage stamp par 3 8th hole offers a great challenge, despite only being a short hole, with even some of the best players in the world have struggled on this infamous par 3.

Portland Course

Widely regarded as one of the great links courses in Scotland, Royal Troons’s Old Course has hosted The Open seven times and boasts one of the toughest back nines in world golf. The Portland links course is a little more sheltered than the Old Course and, of course, shorter. The holes meander through terrain filled with gorse and broom and has a generous helping of par-3s, five in all. This is tempered however, with four par-5s, all of which are on the back nine.
