Golf course overview
Stationed just outside of Lancaster, the course at Lancaster Golf Club measures 6512 with a par of 71 off the white tees. The course has the 5th and 14th holes over 500 yards, with the shortest being the 3rd, 14th, and 18th, all under 170 yards. Accolades and praise are common for the admiration and beauty of this course. After hole 11, Morecambe Bay can be distinctly overlooked as it becomes an astonishing scenic view.
James Braid, a five-time open championship winner and member of the world golf hall of fame, designed the course in 1932, and it was named an instant classic. Golfers who have played many of the Braids designs consider this course to be one of the most challenging during the start of the round. This is due to a tee off 400 yards uphill, proving the first hole a sometimes-unforgiving challenge. Braid remarkably created the course from the existing landscape. He purposely designed the 18th hole tee shot to have a blind view of the pin by the large oak tree, which is one reason why this is the course's signature hole.
Signature Holes
The 18th hole, par 3, labelled ‘Ashton Home’ has a famous elevated tee to the green and is beautifully towered over by the clubhouse to end the round with familiar surroundings. There is a deep bunker just short of the green; however, if you play your tee shot steady and onto the green, it is a great chance for a birdie. This hole is well acknowledged in English golf, so much so that Peter Alliss listed it in his top 10 finishing holes.
