The history of this castle is long, varied and rich, as the first historical reference to this castle will take you back to 1252 when it was part of the Lower Carniolan Freising estate, administered by the de Werde noble, also known as islet knights. Over the past centuries the castle passed from noble family to another. Today the Hotel Grad Otočec is the only one in the country to be sat on a river island and is a member of the prestige association of mansions and restaurants Relais & Châteaux.
