Bethpage Black Golf Course overview
Located in Long Island and just a stone’s throw away from New York City, Bethpage State Park is home to one of the most prestigious public courses in the United States – Bethpage Black Golf Course. Designed by renowned architect A.W. Tillinghast in 1936, the Black Course is known for its incredibly difficult layout.
The course demands precision and strategic shot-making from golfers of all skill levels. One of its iconic features is the warning sign at the first tee that famously declares, "The Black Course is an extremely difficult course which we recommend only for highly skilled golfers”. The warning is certainly fitting, given the course measures a whopping 7,468 yards with elevation changes, deep bunkers, narrow fairways, and thick rough being a recurring theme throughout.
Signature Holes
The fourth hole, a 517-yard par-5, is considered the signature hole at Bethpage Black. With the double dogleg design requiring you to play uphill while navigating cross bunkers, this will test the most skilled of players.
Did You Know?
Bethpage Black has been host to several major golf tournaments, including the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Open when only five players broke par. It is set to host the Ryder Cup on its highly anticipated return to New York in 2025.
The course also ranks #62 in the world according to Top 100 Golf Courses.
