It’s a central American golfing hotspot, but what are the best golf courses to play in Mexico on your next golf holiday?
Once a hidden favourite of travelling golfers, Mexico has increased in popularity over recent years as its reputation within the sport continues to strengthen, particularly as the PGA TOUR travels there a couple of times a year. All-Inclusive resorts look out over stunning white sandy beaches, all whilst being paired with courses laid out by the world’s best designers… what’s not to love?
To help with your planning, why not check out some of the best golf courses in Mexico to play on your next golf trip.
Viewers of the PGA TOUR will be familiar with El Camaleon Course at Mayakoba, with the site playing host to the Mayakoba Classic, a regular fixture in the calendar since 2007. In addition to the breath-taking views of the ocean, the course also features the iconic Devil’s Mouth bunker in the centre of the 1st fairway (although, this plays as hole #7 in the TOUR event).
The Greg Norman design winds its way through the mangroves, with a wide variety of tee-boxes, and pristine conditioning making this a ‘must-play’ whilst on a golf holiday to Cancun & Playa Del Carmen.
A more recent addition to the Cancun region is the Jack Nicklaus-designed Riviera Cancun. The course here is just 15-minutes from the international airport, ideal for adding to the beginning or end of a trip. However, you’ll need to bring your A-game with narrow and undulating fairways keeping you on your toes throughout.
Riviera Cancun is also home to an impressive clubhouse serving wonderful food and drink, and with the tranquil nature of the environment here, it’s definitely worth sticking around for a Margherita or two after the round…
Designed by Jack Nicklaus who called the landscape “one of the greatest pieces of property in the world”, Quivira is located on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, offering a view of the ocean from all 18 holes. Built as the centrepiece for one of the most luxurious resorts in the whole of Mexico, the quality of the course certainly mirrors that of its surroundings! Golf Digest ranked the course within the Top 100 in the World, an accolade we think is certainly much deserved.

Cabo del Sol Golf Club is home to a pair of wonderful golf courses named the Cove and the Desert. Whilst the Cove become a members-only layout in 2020, visitors are still able to enjoy the Tom Weiskopf-designed Desert routing, with spectacular views of the Sea of Cortez throughout.

The Desert Course is a touch more forgiving, with less bunkering to catch wayward shots than its sister course, making this the ideal course for a golf trip. Often considered one of the best golf courses in Mexico and we’re inclined to agree!
Another course down on the Baja Peninsula, Cabo Real first opened for visitors in 1994. The Robert Trent Jones Jnr design features water throughout, although generous fairways and true-rolling greens make this a fair and enjoyable test of golf for all.

The course features spectacular elevation changes, notably down to the Par-3 3rd green, as you wind your way along the coastline. Make sure to also plan in time for some tacos in the clubhouse afterwards, a post-round treat to savour!
Expertly plotted through the jungle, lagoons and a limestone quarry, the Robert Trent Jones Jnr-designed course at Riviera Maya is a fantastic Championship standard golfing facility, with the added benefit of an additional Par-3 executive layout on-site complementing the main routing.
Riviera Maya Golf Club
Riviera Maya benefits from a close relationship with the PGA who have invested heavily into the venue which now also boasts a 300-yard driving range. It’s location just 15 miles from the idyllic village of Tulum also makes this an envious golfing destination.
Palmilla is notable as Jack Nicklaus’ first design in Latin America, and whilst the Golden Bear has gone on to create some splendid destinations in the region, this remains one of our favourites. The 9-hole Ocean loop joined the original Arroyo and Mountain layouts in 1999 to create a varied 27-hole facility packed with quality. You won’t fail to notice the large cardon cacti which adorn the environment here, giving you an authentic Mexican feeling throughout your round!
