With the speed and efficiency of the Eurotunnel, travelling to Le Touquet is just as easy as getting to some places in the UK, with the added allure of being abroad and experiencing a different culture. Simply head down to Folkestone, hop on the Eurotunnel and drive an hour south to Le Touquet - it really is that easy! If you’re looking to break up the drive, then we’d highly recommend playing one of the courses which sit between Calais and Le Touquet, notably Wimereux, a coastal links course, and Golf d’Hardelot, which has two stunning tree-lined courses on-site.
The golf in this corner of the world is simply exceptional, with a real eclectic mix of courses you can play on a single trip. The big three are undoubtedly Golf d’Hardelot, Golf du Touquet and Belle Dune.
Golf d’Hardelot offers two very impressive layouts, Les Pins and Les Dunes. The Pines Course is a Tom Simpson masterpiece dating back to 1934 and one of the very best in Europe, which weaves in and out of a stunning pine forest and strategically positioned sand dunes. The younger Dunes Course is another gem set among undulated woodland, lakes and sand dunes, a fantastic addition to its big sister course.
Golf du Touquet is situated just 5 minutes from Le Touquet town centre and has 45 holes on-site, La Mer, La Foret and Le Manoir. La Mer is their flagship layout and considered to be one of the best courses in the country. Designed in 1931 by arguably the greatest architect of his generation, Harry Colt, this links course is a joy to play, with formidable bunkers, large natural dunes, strong coastal winds, and the occasional sea views from raised tee boxes. La Foret is the shorter of the two 18-hole courses and plays through a 100-year-old pine forest, providing the perfect contrast to the Foret course.
Golf de Belle Dune is another French classic in a region brimming with an incredibly high quantity and quality of golf. Both 9-holes are very distinct of one another which makes this course very fun to play. The front nine plays through beautiful pine and birch trees, and once you step onto the back nine, the course opens into large sand dunes in an inland links style.
And the fun does not stop at these three golf clubs. Wimereux is a criminally underrated links course and given that it is situated equidistance between Calais and Le Touquet, it is a great option to play when you’re on your way in/out of Le Touquet.
Within driving distance of the town centre, golfers can also travel to the likes of Saint-Omer, Golf d’Arras and Dunkerque, which are all terrific layouts in their own right.
For the inevitable evening on the cobbles, Le Touquet packs one hell of a punch. The social epicentre is without a doubt le Globetrotter. Great for sport, large in size and close to the centrally located hotels, groups of golfers will no doubt gravitate towards this lively pub for a drink or two. Smaller groups may prefer L’Impasse. Part cocktail bar and part brasserie, L’Impasse is a great spot for a cocktail and bite to eat, with a classy interior, live music and Latin influence.
For a late-night session, Le Touquet has two nightclubs, with both The Chatham, on Rue St Jean, and the Barding Club on Rue de Londres, opened very late (or early) every day of the week.
For restaurants, you’ll not be short of options either. Ches Perard is unquestionably the most famous restaurant in Le Touquet, known for its fish soup and plateau de fruits de mer. Other notable restaurants include Jean’s Café and Coq Hardi, which are both ideal for either lunch or dinner.
If you’re into your gambling, then you will not be disappointed. The famous casino in Le Touquet was supposedly Ian Fleming’s inspiration for Casino Royale.
Often referred to as Paris by the sea, Le Touquet is an incredibly popular tourist attraction for Parisians looking for a seaside break or Brits looking for a French escape without having to travel too far. For a relatively small town, Le Touquet offers an awful lot for the travelling golfer. The town centre is very colourful with lots of 1920s charm, a variety of bars and restaurants, and a beautiful sandy beach.
With no less than 7km of soft, golden sand, the beach at Le Touquet is the perfect place to clear the head after a night out in the town centre. More adventurous types might want to try sand yachting or horse riding – both are readily available. You can even hop on a Segway for a quick jaunt along the sand.
A 15-minute walk inland from the beach, the iconic Le Touquet lighthouse is a beautiful structure and offers amazing 360-degree panoramic views of coastline (despite its inland location). With 275 steps to get to the top it’s a good workout, but the rewards are ample and you can even see some of the golf courses!
If you’re travelling between Thursday and Saturday, then the local market is a great option if you’re looking for a local stroll. The amazing Art Deco-covered area is a real highlight, with lots of stalls selling local produce… the perfect place to stock up.
Le Touquet lighthouse
The beautiful town centre caters for all budgets, with a wealth of hotels ranging from two to five-star within walking distance of the main high street. Red Fox, Le Caddy and Le Bristol are fantastic boutique hotels which offer Golfbreaks customers fantastic value.
For a more luxurious stay, we’d highly recommend either Le Westminster Barriere or Le Grand Hotel Le Touquet. Le Westminster is a timeless five-star hotel which blends 1930s style with modern amenities, a Michelin-starred restaurant and well-equipped leisure facilities. Le Grand Hotel is a stylish four-star hotel that offers well-appointed guestrooms, a piano bar, brasserie, and spa facilities.
Outside of the town centre, if you’re looking to stay closer to the golf, then we’d suggest staying at Le Touquet Golf Resort, with 45-holes on-site, Hotel du Parc, nearby the famous Golf d’Hardelt, or Aa Saint Omer Hotel du Golf, a terrific resort 30 mins south east of Calais.
