Royal Liverpool Golf Club, also known as Hoylake, is one of the UK’s most storied golfing destinations with a rich history dating back to 1869. This links course has hosted The Open Championship thirteen times, most recently in 2023, with this edition of the tournament showcasing a brand-new Par-3 known as ‘Little Eye’.
The course is a real tale of two halves, with the land nearest to the clubhouse once being used as a horse-racing track, meaning this section is somewhat flatter than the more dune-lined holes that lie closer to the sea. You’ll also find one of the most intimidating opening tee shots in golf here at Hoylake, with the driving range flanking the entire right-hand side. Cut off what you dare as the hole turns 90-degrees around this internal out of bounds … although with it being your first shot of the day, we’d advise not getting too greedy!
While Hoylake doesn’t technically sit in Cheshire, it’s located just a 40-minute drive from Chester and can be paired with a golf trip to this charming city!
Wallasey Golf Club, located on the Wirral Peninsula, is another gem in close proximity to Cheshire and well worth travelling to. Founded in 1891, this traditional links course is renowned for its challenging design and stunning coastal views. The course, designed by Old Tom Morris, features undulating fairways, deep pot bunkers, and fast, true greens that test golfers of all abilities.
Wallasey is also famous as the birthplace of the Stableford scoring system, invented by member Dr. Frank Stableford in 1932. The course makes the most of the rumpled land and builds to an early crescendo with panoramic views of the entire region from the tee box on the Par-5 4th hole. Definitely a course worth adding to your itinerary when visiting Cheshire.
The Cheshire Course is set within the luxurious Carden Park estate, one of our customers best-rated UK golf resorts. This parkland course, designed by the renowned Donald Steel, features rolling fairways, strategically placed bunkers, and stunning views of the Cheshire countryside.
The 18th tee of the Cheshire Course is placed atop a cliff which overlooks the entire estate, before you wind your way back down towards the clubhouse.
Wychwood Park Golf Club offers a modern, championship-standard course that is another favourite amongst our customers. Also located within the beautiful Cheshire countryside, the course has a rather grand feeling, set within acres of tranquil countryside.
Don’t let this fool you, however, as it can also be one of our most challenging courses when played from the back tee markers. In addition to the course itself, Wychwood Park has good practice facilities, with a driving range and dedicated short game area allowing you to sharpen up your game before heading out onto the first tee.
As the name suggests, the Nicklaus Course at Carden Park was designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus and his son Steve. This course is known for its strategic layout, wide fairways, and challenging bunkers, offering a true test of golfing skill.
It’s slightly longer than the aforementioned Cheshire Course, although shares some of the same spectacular views of the region. The Nicklaus Course plays closer to the stunning hotel at Carden Park and can be seen on the drive into the venue; giving a real taste of what’s to come when you arrive.
Portal Championship Course, located in the charming village of Tarporley, and was designed by legendary architect Donald Steel. The overall facility is home to 45-holes of golf, although this routing is certainly our favourite – albeit it can be a tough test, with the back tees stretching out over 7,000 yards.
Like many others in the region, Portal is leafy parkland layout, however, with changes in elevation throughout, and fantastic conditioning, it’s one that should live long in the memory. The Macdonald Portal Hotel is another of our favourite golf resorts in England and offers a fantastic base for a 1 or 2 night break!
Mottram Hall Golf Club is set within the stunning grounds of a Georgian country house hotel, offering a luxurious and challenging golfing experience. This parkland course, designed by renowned architect Dave Thomas, has played host to the PGA Senior Championship with rave reviews given for the layout from those that competed.
In addition to the course itself, Mottram Hall’s facilities are second to none, with a luxurious clubhouse, a state-of-the-art spa, and fine dining options available.
