A glimpse into the history of the RBC Heritage

Shortly after the phenomenal Harbour Town Golf Links was built, Sea Pines developer Charles Fraser announced in 1969 that the course would be home to a new PGA TOUR tournament – Heritage Golf Classic.

Legendary golfer Arnold Palmer went on to win the first year, drawing a great deal of press coverage. Hilton Head Island now owes much of its esteemed golfing reputation to the continued success of the tournament. Former winners here include the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, Tom Watson, Fuzzy Zoeller, David Love III, and many more!

Renamed to RBC Heritage in 2012, it is now bigger than ever with over 100,000 golf enthusiasts making the trip to watch the biggest names in golf battle it out on the fairway. In 2023, following a restructure to the PGA TOUR, the RBC Heritage became one of eight new PGA Tour Signature Events with limited field sizes and elevated purses. This means that the tournaments attracts more bigger names than ever before.

Interestingly, RBC Heritage has a unique tradition to kick off the tournament. After parading around Harbour Town Yacht Basin, the previous winner will be given their Captain of Gentlemen Golfers plaque and then hit a golf ball into the Calibogue Sound using an authentic hickory club. A nod to the history of the game!

RBC Heritage venue – Harbour Town Golf Links

With the help of both Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, famous golf architect Pete Dye created the iconic layout that is Harbour Town Golf Links. Opened in 1967, this course set the standard for the quality of golf on Hilton Head Island. The 18th is one of the most well-recognised holes in the world, with the iconic red and white striped lighthouse and the harbour providing an enchanting backdrop for the final hole of the course.

The tricky layout provides a challenge for players of all levels, even the tour pros. With small greens that demand precise shots and strategic play alongside the strong winds the island is known for, this course is anything but easy.

As a spectator, you’ll have a front-row seat to witness golfing history, adding unparalleled excitement to your experience.
