The Phoenix Open began in 1932, but due to lack of local support, the tournament was discontinued after the 1935 event. The tournament was revived thanks to the energy and vision of one man, Bob Goldwater, Sr. An avid golfer, Goldwater persuaded his fellow Thunderbirds into running the event, and his influential manner was successful. So, in 1939, Bob Goldwater’s new fledgling golf tournament was the official rebirth of the Phoenix Open.

Nick Taylor won the 2024 WM Phoenix Open in thrilling fashion, besting Charley Hoffman in a playoff to claim his fourth Tour title.

The WM Phoenix Open is known by several nicknames, including “the Greatest Show on Grass” and “the People's Open,” reflecting its spectator-focused atmosphere.

People wear green for Saturday’s green out. For every fan, volunteer, service animal and even players and caddies who wear green, the tournament hosts Thunderbirds and title sponsor WM will donate money to deserving non-profit organisations with a sustainability focus. Green represents both the money that goes to charity and the green for what Waste Management do at the zero waste event.

The Pro-Am at the WMPO allows amateur golfers to play alongside professional golfers in a relaxed, fun atmosphere, typically held the Wednesday before the tournament.
