One of the fastest growing tournaments

First played at Fulford in York in 1976, after evolving from the Ladies Amateur Stroke Play Championship to include professional players, the AIG Women’s Open has quickly grown to become the most international major in women's golf and one of the most prestigious.

We have seen plenty of incredible women rise through the rankings at this spectacular tournament, including Michelle Wie, Anna Nordqvist, Lydia Ko, Danielle Kang and the 2018 AIG Women's Open champion Georgia Hall.

Not only has this tournament been host to an abundance of inspiring golfers but has also been held at some of Britain’s best golf courses. Kingsbarns, Royal Lytham & St Annes, Muirfield and Sunningdale are just a few of the renowned courses that have held the AIG Women’s Open and the line-up 2025 is just as impressive with Royal Porthcawl confirmed as the next hosts.

History of the AIG Women’s Open

The first Women's British Open was played in 1976 when the Ladies' British Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship was extended to include the five professionals, with the players competing for a total prize fund of £500. Now, this iconic event attracts the best 144 professional and amateur female golfers from around the world, boasting the strongest field in golf, with over £2million prize money at stake.

Unlike its male counterpart, the Women's Open has not adopted a links-only policy. Held over 72 holes, the tournament is hosted at varying types of British courses including parkland, heathland and the more traditional links layouts.

At first, organisers found it difficult to get the most prestigious courses to agree to host the event, with the exception of Royal Birkdale, which hosted it twice during its early days. However, In 2010, four additional Open Championship venues became first-time hosts for the women's event, including Carnoustie, Royal Liverpool, Royal Troon and Muirfield.
