Old Tom Morris Links Golf Course overview
The Old Tom Morris Links at Rosapenna is a par-71 and 6900 yards off the tips. Originally designed by Old Tom in the early 1890s, it was soon the place to be seen playing, as evidenced by a photo from 1896 of a group including Harry Vardon relaxing on the lawns outside the hotel. Vardon and James Braid (six and five-time Open Champions respectively) upgraded the course in 1906 and Harry Colt just a few years later.
More recently both Pat Ruddy and Tom Doak have had an influence, and what you have today is a classic links that’s a wonderful blend of old-fashioned and contemporary. The fairways have a serious ‘rumple’ and the greens are large and firm, much like Old Tom’s more famous St Andrews design. More forgiving than its newer sister courses, Sandy Hills Links, and consistently ranked amongst Ireland’s top 35 courses.
Signature hol
In 2009 the new Strand nine opened to replace the original back nine. These are now played as the front nine with the original Old Tom Morris Valley nine becoming the back nine. The holes are a great mix of the old and the new, and we’ll leave it up to you to pick a favorite!
Did You Know?
Old Tom Morris was born is 1821 and died at the age of 87 in 1908. Although he didn’t invent the game he is regarded as the sport’s founding father and played in the first 36 Open Championships, winning four times. His son Tom Morris Jnr also won the Claret Jug four times. Perhaps Old Tom’s indelible mark on the game is his masterpiece in St Andrews, the Old Course.
