The European Golf Course overview
Located amongst tumbling dunes and featuring sea views from just about every hole, The European is one of the longest links at just under 7500 yards off the tips, but thankfully there are plenty of tee boxes to chooses from. Many a champion has played here with Tiger Woods holding the course record at 67 and Rory winning the Irish Amateur title. Padraig Harrington prepared for his two Open Championship victories here by winning the Irish PGA in the week before both.
This is an inspiring and memorable course with a great variety of holes that include five very close to the sea…so close that it is not uncommon to find players searching for their golf balls on the beach. Ruddy has done an incredible job using the natural lay of the land, similar to that of Kyle Phillips at Kingsbarns in Scotland, which is also regarded as one of the best modern links in the British Isles.
Signature hole
The par-4 7th at 470-yards is ranked amongst the world’s best 100 holes. Set on a sandbank that runs through a bed of reeds, with a burn running down the right side and towering sand dunes on the left and Brittas Bay shimmering behind the green. This is stroke index 1.
Did You Know?
There are two extra par-3s at The European which are in play most days and allow the golfer a 20-hole round. You will also find the longest green in the world here at the 12th, which measures 127-yards from front to back and makes a three-putt feel like quite an accomplishment.
