Valderrama
Idyllically situated in Sotogrande in southern Spain, Real Club Valderrama is Europe’s crowning jewel thanks to its meticulous Robert Trent Jones Sr design and history of hosting major tournaments, including the 1997 Ryder Cup and the annual Andalucia Masters. The golf course is often called the ‘Augusta of Europe’, which is a testament to its conditioning, clever bunkering, and undulating terrain.
West Cliffs
Located on-site at the impressive Praia d’Ely Rey Resort outside of Lisbon, West Cliffs is one of the world’s best new golf courses. Cynthia Dye (Pete Dye’s niece) laid out a true modern masterpiece that sits elegantly along the silver coast featuring rolling sand dunes and coastal vegetation. Plus, with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean from every hole, West Cliffs offers a unique links experience in a pristine natural environment.
Stadium Course, PGA Camiral
The Stadium Course at PGA Camiral Golf & Wellness adds to southern Europe’s impressive list of high-end layouts and is often categorized alongside Valderrama. Fairways lined with old oak trees and heather, perfectly rolling greens, and numerous water hazards are just a few of the course characteristics. The resort is situated in Catalunya, between Girona and Barcelona, which is the perfect location for your next European golf package.
Dunas Golf Club Comporta
Situated over an hour from Lisbon within a secluded coastal setting on the edge of the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, the Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta is perhaps the best new course worldwide. David McLay-Kidd, of Bandon Dunes fame, has developed a unique links layout with festusca grass, sand dunes and sand waste areas flanked by pines, rippled fairways, and large elevation changes. It’s beautiful and it’s a lot of fun!
Finca Cortesin
Regarded as one of Spain’s best golf courses by the prestigious Golf Digest magazine, Finca Cortesin received critical acclaim in 2023 when it hosted the Solheim Cup in a hotly contested affair. The course captures the natural characteristics of the area, with perfectly manicured Bermuda grass and 20 varieties of flora in the surrounding Mediterranean forest. Its location in southern Spain and its close proximity to Valderrama, Real Club Sotogrande, and La Reserva, make it the perfect hotspot for a bucket-list golf trip to Spain.
Explore iconic countries on a European golf trip
Europe is a historic continent filled with many unique cultures and stunning landscapes, so no matter where you go, there is so much for you to explore off the course. Each country and region specializes in its own wine and gastronomy, with oceanfront towns, historic architecture and breathtaking scenery in abundance!
Here are some of our favorite golf destinations in Europe:
Portugal
Portugal has long been a popular choice for vacationers and is continually evolving, especially when it comes to the golf. And nowhere is that truer than Lisbon, where golfers can combine world-class golf with a city brimming with superb nightlife, stunning architecture, and great weather. It really does tick every box!
The rocky coastline sets the scene for a more rugged, links style of golf – particularly at West Cliffs Golf Links, Oitavos Dunes, and Troia Golf. We’d also strongly recommend Dunas Terras da Comporta. This is the latest addition to Lisbon, a stunning David McLay-Kidd design which is reminiscent of the courses around Pinehurst and Southern Pines.
Spain
Much of the guaranteed weather and high proximity of golf courses are based in the southern area of Spain. The Costa del Sol is possibly the biggest golf destination in Europe with more than 70 courses dotted around the beautiful oceanfront towns of Marbella, Sotogrande, and Malaga. Across this stunning stretch of coastline sits a selection of Europe’s highest-ranked courses including Valderrama, Real Club Sotogrande, Finca Cortesin, La Reserva, and San Roque Club.
Elsewhere in Spain sits the iconic Camiral Golf & Wellness resort, an hour from Barcelona. Here lies Spain’s leading resort with two of the country’s top courses on-site, two first-class hotels, and a multitude of facilities. It is the perfect venue for combining golf with one of Europe’s most culturally diverse and popular cities!
Italy
Golf and Italy have become synonymous with one another since the 2023 Ryder Cup. Before then, Italy’s reputation was underappreciated despite the DP World Tour (European Tour) visiting here every year since 1972. The variety of destinations is unrivalled worldwide, with countryside retreats, city center stays, and luxurious island escapes. Add to this the famous food and wine for a remarkable vacation.
Visit the historic capital of Rome and take on the famous Ryder Cup venue – Marco Simone Golf & Country Club. Recreate your favorite moments from golf’s greatest contest, while immersing yourself in the ancient city.
France
Outside of the UK and the US, France might be home to more top courses than any other country in the world. Its varied landscapes make for a whole host of course types - links, inland links, woodland, heathland, parkland… France has the lot!
It also has the home of the 2018 Ryder Cup and 2024 Olympic venue, Le Golf National - the perfect risk and reward golf course on the outskirts of Paris. Add to this the famous, culture, food and wine for one of our best all-round golf vacation experiences.
