Brora Golf Club overview

Brora was established in 1891 as 9-holes and extended to 18 in 1900. James Braid was then paid the princely sum of 25 pounds (about $35) to redesign the course in 1924 and little has changed since. Located about 75 minutes north of Inverness in one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland, this is not an easy place to get to, however well worth the effort. The scenery is spectacular and the golf course will blow your mind.

Brora Golf Course overview

What a fantastic little gem this is! A par-70 at just over 6200 yards off the back tees, Brora is a traditional out-and-back layout with the opening nine holes hugging the North Sea coastline.

The views are fantastic with so many holes so close to the sea and no dunes to obscure your view, however, this means less protection from the wind. A burn flows through multiple holes with sheep and cattle roaming freely, which is why there are electric fences circling every green and why the rough is kept short. Brora is totally unpretentious and unique links experience, with shooting your handicap a real challenge simply due to the distracting and breath-taking setting.

Signature Holes

The par-3 9th hole is definitely one of the most visually stunning. Called the Sea Hole and measuring 152 yards, you are practically playing on the beach which runs down the right side. To make matters worse, anything left of the green will get swallowed up by either a bunker or a hollow. Get your camera out!

Did You Know?

Brora is James Braid’s most northerly course in his native Scotland and is the headquarters of the James Braid Golfing Society. The late Peter Thomson, a famous Australian golfer who won the Open Championship five times visited Brora regularly and proclaimed it to be his favorite course in the world.
