Wallasey Golf Club
Liverpool & Southport, England
Wallasey Golf Club overview
Located on the cusp of the Wirral Peninsula just 15 minutes from Royal Liverpool, Wallasey Golf Club was founded in 1891 to ease pressure on the membership at its more famous neighbor.
Old Tom Morris of St Andrews laid out the links in 1893 and with many alterations over the years due to coastal erosion and land lease issues, the course we see today has been heavily influenced by the likes of Hawtree, James Braid and Donald Steel.
What put Wallasey firmly on the map was one of its members called Dr Frank Stableford, who invented the Stableford scoring system that is still used today.
Wallasey Golf Course overview
Little of the 1891 Old Tom Morris course remains intact today due to coastal changes, sand shifted by gales, war office requirements, land lease issues and the desire for extra length, however, the hallmarks at Wallasey haven’t changed – undulating fairways carved through towering sand dunes along with elevated greens.
A par-72 and measuring less than 6700 yards from the back tees, Wallasey is not too big like a Royal Birkdale but is more intimate and picturesque, and great fun to play with an endless variety of shots required. A great supporting act to Royal Liverpool and a genuine gem on this famous links-laden coastline.
Signature Holes
The par-4 11th hole measures 412 yards of the tips and wouldn’t look out of place at any of the Open Championship venues. First, you must thread your drive between a corridor of large sand dunes before hitting an elevated approach to a two-tiered green that’s surrounded by trouble.
Did You Know?
In 1930 the great Bobby Jones came through Open Championship Qualifying at Wallasey to then go on and win his 4th and final Claret Jug at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake). Incidentally, 1930 was also the year that Jones won the Grand Slam, which in those days included the US Open and US Amateur as well as the Open Championship and British Amateur. Although the four tournaments that make up the modern-day Grand Slam are different, this incredible feat is yet to be repeated.
