Doonbeg Golf Links Course overview
Opened for play in 2002, Doonbeg Golf Links is an outstanding Greg Norman design that has subsequently been snapped up by Trump as part of Trump International Golf Links & Hotel, situated on the southwest coast of Ireland. Spanning 1.5 miles of crescent-shaped beach and century-old sand dunes along Doughmore Bay, the course was redesigned by Martin Hawtree in 2016, which has increased its playability tenfold.
Laid out through the sand dunes, taking the natural route with least disturbance, Doonbeg is as raw and rugged as a links can be. As a result, there are five par-3s and five par-5s that make up this magnificent par-72 which measures just over 7000 yards from the tips. Spectacular Atlantic Ocean views come into play on 16 holes, with the speed and direction of the wind throwing up a different challenge every day.
Signature Holes
The 14th is a sensational par-3 measuring a mere 111 yards. The wind will dictate your club selection which could be anything from a sand wedge to a 3-iron. Alternatively, the 432-yard par-4 18th hole is a wonderful finish. Similar to Pebble Beach, Greg Norman preserved the longest stretch of coastal property for this hole.
Did You Know?
To mark the opening of the course on July 9th 2002 Greg Norman defeated Irish Ryder Cup star Padraig Harrington 2 & 1 in an exhibition match. Also, when Norman designed the course 14 greens and 12 fairways were simply mown rather than having to be created, such was the land so perfect for a links golf course.
