Pennard Golf Club
South Wales, Wales
Pennard Golf Club overview
Pennard Golf Club, designed by the great James Braid in 1908 is a fantastic clifftop links course near Swansea in South Wales. Providing wonderful views of Oxwich Bay from its elevated position at 200-feet above sea level this venue is rightly regarded as one of the UK’s best ‘undiscovered’ golf courses.
In fact, due to the uniqueness of being a links course at elevation it has gained the tagline “The links in the sky”, and the renowned course architect Tom Doak regards it as one of his favorite courses.
There is an excellent clubhouse where golfers can get a drink and a bite to eat, with an outside decking area looking out to Three Cliffs Bay and first tee.
Pennard Golf Course overview
Although a modest 6420-yards from the back tees, the par-71 Pennard is a wonderfully enjoyable round of golf providing a true links challenge with its many undulations, hollows and dunes. Sitting at 200-feet above ground it means the wind is often prevailing which acts as one of the main defences to this relatively short course.
Other features golfers can expect to find are some blind shots and the rarity of a flat lie. Visitors also need to make sure they are not distracted by the cattle that graze on the links! No golf trip in South Wales is complete without a visit to Pennard Golf Club, which even has the 12th century Pennard Castle ruins standing tall and silent behind the course.
Signature Holes
The par-5 16th called ‘Great Tor’ measures 516 yards off the tips and has the kind of views that will distract you from your golf game. A magnificent hole that is gettable in two for the big hitters, but be careful of the fast sloping green that’s exposed to the prevailing wind!
