Tobacco Road Golf Club
Southern Pines, USA
Tobacco Road Golf Club overview
Ranked one of the best courses in North Carolina, Tobacco Road is a Mike Strantz masterpiece situated approximately 20 miles to the north of Southern Pines and Pinehurst Village. You arrive through farmhouse gates and wind your way through the property until reaching an idyllic clubhouse sat amongst the pines.
A warm southern welcome greets you as you enter an open-plan layout where the pro-shop, snack bar, sofas and open fireplace vented by an antique double-flue tobacco curer create a very homely feel. With rocking chairs on the back porch, you can enjoy a beer and watch all the action on the 18th green.
Hit some warmup shots on the range before making your way to the first tee where an experience like no other awaits on the Tobacco Road Course.
Golf Course at Tobacco Road overview
Built on the land originally worked by tobacco farmers, later shaped through mining and sand excavation, Mike Strantz built a masterpiece in the Sandhills region of North Carolina. Known for pushing the boundaries in design, Strantz cut through the sand quarries and natural landscape to create a course that has been described as ‘Pine Valley on steroids’.
With five sets of tees, all golfers can take on the course at a length they feel comfortable with, however, it was always Strantz’s goal to test “a player’s eye, determination, and wits”, and he does this in abundance at Tobacco Road. Vast sandy waste areas, blind tee shots and elevation changes both into greens and off the tee create not only a spectacular golf course but one that is truly unique. It is an absolute ‘must-play’ when heading to North Carolina on a golf vacation.
Signature Hole
Every hole is a unique challenge and it would be fair to say there are 18 signature holes out on the golf course. However here are a few to look out for… firstly two par-5s… the 4th hole sees the fairway turn dramatically to the left around a huge waste area, and the 11th plays hard to the right around what can only be described as a sandpit that drops 40 feet below the fairway.
The 14th is a par-3 of 194 yards from the back tee played from an elevated position across the water to a two-tiered green that is protected by the lake short and right and bunkers if you bail to the left. Seven tee boxes are in place offering a variety of distances and angles into this very hard to find putting surface.
