Castle Course
at St Andrews Links
St Andrews, Scotland
Castle Course overview
A good example of modern links design, the Castle Course opened for play to visitors in mid-2008. Featuring its own clubhouse with a restaurant that offers beautiful views across the bay and great practice facilities this is a worthy addition to the St Andrews area. There is no denying that this course splits opinion, mainly due to the difficulty it presents, however for those straight hitters that enjoy tough greens it will be a thoroughly enjoyable challenge.
Always in excellent condition and with multiple tee options, the wind plays a big role on this clifftop links, however, it is the massively undulating and fast greens that require good approach play.
Signature hole
The par-4, 17th is the standout hole, offering exceptional views across to the town of St Andrews, where the tee box is perched on the edge of the clifftop. Tee shots are hit over a large ravine where anything too far right is lost. Aim left and hope for a good bounce or aim for the dead center of the green. Whatever option is taken, a solid strike is needed with this hole playing into the wind more often than not.
Did You Know?
The course takes its name from Kinkell Castle, a middle-age castle said to have sat on the site where the golf course now lies.
