New Course
at St Andrews Links
St Andrews, Scotland
New Course at St Andrews overview
The New Course is an excellent links course that if situated anywhere else along the Scottish coast would probably receive a lot more praise. Designed by Old Tom Morris in 1895 and measuring 6362-yards from the standard tees, the par-71 is a solid test of golf where all aspects of your game are likely to be required.
The fairways are narrower than the Old Course and the bunkering less severe, but the undulating terrain and challenging greens make this a classic links layout. The course has been a favorite with locals for years, boasting a fine collection of par-3’s and some commendable long holes which make the New Course a great introduction to links golf and typically exceeding visitor’s expectations.
Facilities are shared with the other St Andrews Links courses which include the Links Trust Clubhouse and the St Andrews Golf Academy which has a driving range.
Signature Holes
The par-4, 10th hole is one of the strongest on the New Course. A tricky, blind tee shot is followed by a long approach to a well-shaped green that interestingly does not have any bunkers.
Did You Know?
The Royal & Ancient Golf Club chose to pay to have the New Course built-in exchange for an allocation of tee times on the Old Course. An agreement that still stands today.
